I cannot believe the year clicked by so fast…it seems that time just keeps speeding up! Unless of course you are trying to do jump rope for 30 minutes at CrossFit, then it seems like the clock slows down to a near stop. Oh well, no matter how fast or slow it seems, if we take the time to find the joy in every minute we will live a happier more fulfilled life.
I wanted to share and reflect with my friends and family on 2011, so I wrote all of you this note. I have found the personal and business treasures that were buried in 2011 and I hope you have, or will also. I broke it up into two parts personal and business. I hope you ENJOY!
Personal Treasure Discovered in 2011
Out of all the 2011 business turmoil and financial changes came an amazing gift for my family… it was “TIME”. Quality, amazing real time spent together with my three beautiful girls, my Mom, Angie’s Mom and Dad (Nash) and other immediate family members. We worked harder than ever this year, but we did it all together.
We did not really travel anywhere. We cut back on all spending, we did not even go out much. What we did do was make a point to spend real and quality time with each other. We spent nearly every day working together, cooking together, eating together, exercising together, playing games together and helping each other with all sorts of “do it yourself” projects.
There were so many nights, I can’t even count them all, that we all just sat around our wine barrel table (one of our DIY projects) or on our patio for 5-6 hours eating an amazing meal (that we conjured up out of nothing), talking, laughing and playing games. This was our gift in 2011, one that we will cherish and carry on for the rest of our lives… it was truly amazing.
Personal Treasure: When times get tough choose to pull your family together and experience everything with each other, it is truly a blessing that will make your life amazing.
Business Treasure Discovered in 2011
From a business standpoint, I thought 2009 and then 2010 were incredibly challenging years, but then 2011 hit. It was not business as usual and we could not wait it out any longer, 4 years of recession had taken its toll and there was no bail out for small businesses… the businesses that normally drive our economy.
2011 proved to be a year of testing our focus, our drive, our determination, our imagination and our ability to adapt and change. 2011 gave many of us a good swift kick in the rear. The business environment in 2011 forced us to make changes, and those who have figured out what changes to make and embraced them started to pull ahead.
So… what in the heck are the changes we need to make in 2012 to get ahead?
I pondered this question throughout the year. I concluded that rapid changes in the business environment, communications, technology and the availability of massive amounts of information on any subject have really made all of us “generalists”. We can easily figure out how to do just about anything with the few clicks of a mouse or a little research and ingenuity. But, does that make us good at it or able to make money at it and how do we market it? So, then what makes one business more successful than another?
The answer is laser focused specialization. Every successful business that I looked at in 2011 did ONE thing great…they were the undisputed champion at a single product, service or offering. Even the superstore Walmart is really great at only one thing “they are the low price leader”; and FEDEX “when it absolutely positively has to be there overnight”. They have both achieved mastery of a their offerings, they are the “go to experts” that you can depend on.
I have found that this same principle applies to local and small businesses, for example would you hire a plumber to fix your pool equipment or would you call a pool specialist? Would you call a remodeling contractor if you have a roof leak or would you call a roofer? If you have a computer virus would you call someone who builds websites? You get the picture, we want and need specialists.
Our business world is transitioning from business generalists to specialists or “experts” in nearly every field. Even large businesses have a singular, niche focus that they have taken into every market. Gone are the days of “I can do everything for you”; from 2011 and beyond you will need to position yourself as the “go to expert” in your niche or field.
If we take that concept and apply it to our businesses then we can start building success right away in 2012. With this kind of laser targeting everything will get easier from marketing our business to delivery of our product or service; and since we will be so focused we will continue to find ways to improve our offering, our skills and we will find more opportunities.
It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that leads to long-term success. Success that is not dependent on the economy, our government or anyone else. If we are positioned as the “go to expert” in our field then our product or service will be in demand, we can demand a premium and we will be successful. It is that simple!
So what do you focus on?
Every single one of us has a special talent, skill set, technique, unique knowledge or some kind of gift. It is usually something we love to do because we are good at it and people ask us about it. If we take that one gift, no matter what it is and give it to the world with focus, determination, passion and a plan then 2012 will be our best year ever and the beginning our new empires.
Make a commitment to make this change in your business starting today, January 1, 2012… Laser target your niche and position yourself as the “go to expert” in your field. Start taking the steps to make it happen now. As the expert in your field, 2012 will be the best business year you have ever had. It will set the stage for your self-fulfilling prophecy, leading to your long-term success.
Business Treasure: The expert in every niche is in demand at all times… in every market and through every economic cycle.

What a blessing for that bird I have a feeling many of them won’t be so lucky!
But, is Liberty really blessed or is he not going to be able to fulfill his mission in life? It really depends on how you look at things?
If you were raised and groomed your entire life to be selected as the center piece of an amazing feast for a family that would appreciate every tasty morsel, while they were celebrating there thankfulness; wouldn’t you be proud to be the one selected? It would be a blessing to be the “chosen one”.
Life is kind of funny like that; it really depends on how you look at it… as the saying goes “your glass is either half empty or half full”. I choose full and continually filling to the point of overflow, that way everyday is a great day!
No matter what life challenges cross your path, you can choose to see them as blessings, and turn them into positive experiences. You can be thankful and make the most out of them. You can make everyday a great day! It is an amazing way to live.
My family and I have more than we can express to be thankful for and we choose to give thanks each and every day. It’s not about monetary or physical things; it’s about life, love, family, friends, health, faith, and the wonderful Country and City we live in. We are also especially thankful for Thanksgiving Day, because it is an entire day for us to celebrate how grateful and thankful we are, together with our family and friends.

We are ten months into 2011 and moving fast, before we realize it we will be in 2012. Let me ask you a simple question:
Have you accomplished what you set out to accomplish in 2012?
This applies to your personal life and your business, but I am just going to focus on business. After talking to many business people this year, most of them say their biggest challenge is not enough sales. I ask them what their sales goals are and they usually look at me with a puzzled look. They have not quantified their sales goals!
If you have not quantified your sales goals, then how can you reach them? If you know you need $X,XXX,XXX.XX in sales then you can work backwards into the problem and figure out how many leads you really need to get the sales and then you can figure out how to get the leads.
This is basic business and basic math that most small businesses forget about. TODAY, take 15 minutes in a quiet room… write it down and do the math. Then post it where you will continually see it. Once you figure it out, then you can develop a blueprint or plan to get you where you need to go.

The 2 most important things you need your website to do for you.
This is a typical conversation I regularly have about websites:
Customer: “Ron, I already have this great website that I had built by ‘so&so’.”
Me: “Is it working for you?”

Determine your personal area of excellence and then determine how can you best capitalize on it!
The idea is to do what you do best and hire professionals to do the rest. You can make more money and enjoy less frustration if you focus on your area of expertise and excellence. This is the easiest way to make more money with the expertise you already have.
For example, if you are a chiropractor should you be trying to figure out how to build a website or do your own marketing? Wouldn’t your time be better spent working with your patients, helping them and making money in the process?
It is also a matter of economics. Let’s say you make $150 per hour performing your trade. You now decide to try to design a new brochure for your business. It takes you 4 hours of layout (assuming you even know how to use the design software), 2 hours to write the copy, and 2 hours trying to find the right printer and coordinating drop off/pick up etc. You now have 8 hours wrapped up in this brochure, you could have made an additional $1,200 (8 x $150) during the same time frame performing your trade.
A professional designer could have produced your brochure for roughly ¼ to ½ of what it really cost you and probably done a much better job. If you hired a professional you would have completed the job with much less frustration and at the same time you would have still made an additional $600 to $800 dollars over and above the cost of your brochure.
Here is another perfect example: A general contractor hires subcontractors that are specialists in each field because the specialists can do a higher quality job, quicker and for less money than a non-specialist. Therefore the specialty of the general contractor is to organize and coordinate the subcontractors; making money all along the way.
Determine your personal area of excellence then determine how you can best capitalize on it.

The answer is overwhelmingly yes, however, it should be utilized as just one of the many strategies you use to build your online presence. The Internet easily surpassed any single other means of finding information long ago. In fact, According to a consumer report, 97% of consumers research products and services online before buying them. SO… IF YOU ARE NOT FOUND ONLINE YOU WILL NOT GET THE BUSINESS!!!
With Google tools you can easily measure search advertising’s impact on your business. The numbers are there: spend as much or as little as you like, see what’s working for you and adjust as needed. You are in complete control. Here are 5 quick tips you can use to get started with Google AdWords advertising.
Ron’s Quick Tips:
- Be very, very specific with the keywords you select. The more specific you are the more you will improve these critical variables: placement, cost per click, click through rate, conversion and return on investment. Google’s tools let you easily search and select specific keywords and then measure the results.
- Be location specific with your keywords, ads and landing pages. Google search algorithms are becoming more and more location specific. Google calculations try to locate where the search is coming from and place results that are close in proximity. This has become even more important since more searches are being done through mobile devices that have GPS capabilities.
- Write an effective ad. An effective ad includes variations of your keywords and location. It also includes your unique selling proposition and a very specific call to action. Google has good examples to follow; you should test and fine tune many different variations to see which ones really work.
- Make your landing page specific. Your landing page is the page that people “land on” when they click on your ad; it does not have to be the home page of your website, it can be any page you select. You can even build a special page just for that ad. Make sure the landing page complements the ad in these ways; name of the page, keywords, description, ad specific content, a great call to action and all of your contact information.
- To get the most bang for you buck TEST, TEST, and TEST. Test variations of your key words, your ads your landing pages, and test your advertising times…. This can be fun and strategic; you are trying to put together the best combination to produce the highest rate of return on your advertising investment.
BONUS TIP: Put yourself in the shoes of your prospect… what would they search for, what ad language would get them to click on your ad, what landing page would get them interested and what call to action would get them to act? Think like your prospect and you will nail your AdWords campaign!
Be strategic and keep the budget tight, until you see what works.
